David Bowie is…

Having finished this project at the V&A, I casually asked, ‘So, who is this David Bowie?’, which caused shock, disdain, and even anger amongst colleagues here at Helm-X. A few weeks later, with his exhibition at the Victoria & Albert sold out in record breaking speed, it seemed that I desperately needed educating! And so I was enlightened about David Bowie’s 40 year illustrious artistic career.

David Bowie is…’ is already proving to be the V&A’s most popular exhibition in its history. It explores Bowie’s extraordinary contribution to culture and his influence on art, music and fashion. Together with The Hub, Helm-X, produced the eye-catching feature in the main room of the exhibition. It is one of the most conceptual visualisations ever used, a towering screen playing Bowie’s hits itself formed from spectacualrly lit glass boxes encasing some of his most visually impressive stage outfits.

Gucci’s creative genius Frida Giannini provided the awe-inspiring vision for the stunning feature wall, behind the projections and glamorous outfits Helm-X made it structurally possible. The 8.8m square wall was made up of 16 powdercoated 2.2m square box frame units which bolted together to form the wall. Selected boxes house Bowie’s most recognizable costumes and the glass fronts collectively form a huge projection screen for an overwhelming visual display of Bowie’s life.

The exhibition runs throughout the summer until the 11th August 2013, tickets are available at http://www.vam.ac.uk/content/exhibitions/david-bowie-is/
