HelmX at London 2012
Recently Helm-X completed a challenging project at the Olympic Village for Adidas, working for our client SDD. The main aim of the project was to construct a steel portal framed building on the car park roof of Westfield Shopping Centre in Stratford, overlooking the Olympic Stadium. The structure was 40m by 20m in dimensions with a mezzanine floor, complete with handrail and staircase. The building also manipulated the existing steelwork of the car park to form a terrace area which adjoined to our mezzanine. The building was clad internally and roofed using composite insulated cladding. We constructed a tunnel to join our building to the Westfield shopping centre for access.
Construction of the project was particularly challenging as parallel to the shopping centre lies Stratford International Station, so all of our steelwork had to be craned on to the roof when the trains were not running….in the middle of the night!
The building was used by Adidas as a hospitality suite for athletes and a press centre for journalists. All the major athletes of the Olympics passed through the doors of our building, including Andy Murray, Sir Steve Redgrave, Victoria Pendleton, Sir Chris Hoy and David Beckham. Check out photos at;

Team GB’s comical ‘hit’ remake of Queen’s Don’t Stop Me Now was also filmed in our building;
Overall the project was a huge success for Adidas, our client SDD, Helm-X….and team GB of course!
